AIH Award Winners

The American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) recognizes the following individuals for their outstanding accomplishments in the fields of groundwater, surface water, and water quality:

  • Vicki Kretsinger Grabert, PH (Luhdorff & Scalmanini Consulting Engineers) – Charles V. Theis Award for Contributions to Groundwater
  • Dr. Phil Bedient (Rice University) – Ray K. Linsley Award for Contributions to Surface Water
  • Dr. Ying Ouyang, PH (U.S. Forest Service) – Robert G. Wetzel Award for Water Quality

These awards are named after prominent scientists and engineers, who have made numerous lasting contributions to the hydrologic sciences. Join us in congratulating Vicki Kretsinger Grabert, PH, Dr. Phil Bedient, and Dr. Ying Ouyang, PH!

Charles V. Theis Award for Contributions to Groundwater - Vicki Kretsinger Grabert, PH

Vicki has more than 30 years of experience in regional groundwater resource management and groundwater quality assessments. Additionally, she has played key leadership roles in promoting technical collaboration, education, and training of groundwater hydrologists, and in development and implementation of legislation and key polices, regulations, and management strategies for sustainable groundwater resources management. Her technical contributions and achievements during her career supported improved groundwater resources management across California for agriculture, industrial, and municipal beneficial uses.

Ray K. Linsley Award for Contributions to Surface Water - Dr. Phil Bedient

Dr. Bedient has been a long-time leading applied researcher in watershed flooding, storm-surge impacts, flood early warning systems, and surface water quality. He formed the Severe Storm Prediction Center (SSPEED) at Rice University in 2009 consisting of a team of seven universities and 15 investigators from Gulf coast universities dedicated to improving storm prediction, education, and evacuation from disaster. He has also spent the majority of his career at Rice University where has become one of the most notable national figures in surface water hydrology, especially as it relates to flooding and stormwater runoff.

Robert G. Wetzel Award for Water Quality - Dr. Ying Ouyang, PH

Dr. Ouyang has made transformative contributions to hydrology, soil physics, and water resources. He is a world-renowned hydrologist in developing STELLA models. Additionally, he served as associate editor for the Journal of Environmental Quality of Soil Science Society of America for 15 years.

AIH Executive Committee Vacancies

Call to all members interested in taking on a leadership role to support the advancement of hydrology and promotion of certified hydrologists and hydrologic technicians in the United States. The American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) is seeking nominations for members to join its Executive Committee in the position of either Secretary-Membership Liaison or Vice President for Policy and Advocacy.

Secretary-Membership Liaison

The Secretary-Membership Liaison shall serve as the Executive Committee’s liaison to AIH members; support timely processing and review of membership applications by the Executive Office and Board of Registration, respectively; coordinate with the President, Executive Director, and Executive Committee members to identify agenda items for Executive Committee meetings in advance of each meeting; prepare meeting summary with action items for Executive Committee meetings; manage and monitor status of action items from Executive Committee meetings; support the President and President-Elect with preparation of an annual report for the Institute; manage elections adminsitered by the Executive Committee, aside from elections for the Secretary-Membership Liaison postion; lead maintenance of AIH historical records; perform duties as requested by the Executive Committee; and serve as a member of the committees.

The term for this position will begin once nominations are reviewed and election results are verified. The duration will be for four (4) years, with the option for reelection to have a maximum of two (2) periods for this elected Executive Committee position.

Vice President for Policy and Advocacy

The Vice President for Policy and Advocacy shall have the responsibility of leading advocacy and policy development for the Institute in coordination with the Executive Committee. Specific duties may include investigating and reviewing state and federal legislation, regulations, and policies related to certification of professional engineers and scientists; engaging with advocacy, labor, and/or policy groups to support federal and state requirements for professional hydrologist licensure for certain career positions and job functions or roles, including development of policy papers and/or draft legislation; coordinating with the President and Executive Committee on strategic initiatives in these matters; and report to the Executive Committee on findings and provide recommendations on advocacy and policy development initiatives.

The term for this position will begin once nominations are reviewed and election results are verified. The duration will be for four (4) years, with the option for reelection to have a maximum of two (2) periods for this elected Executive Committee position.

RFI – Certification Examination Support Services

The American Institute of Hydrology (hereinafter ‘AIH’) is issuing this Request for Information (hereinafter ‘RFI’) as an invitation for entities, that have specialized experience in hydrology and qualifications related to the development of certification examinations, to submit a brief statement of interest in receipt of a formal Request for Proposals (hereinafter ‘RFP’). AIH intends to issue an RFP after receiving and evaluating responses from entities for contractor support services related to the development and administration of certification examinations for AIH. Responses to the RFI will assist AIH in developing the scope of services for an RFP that will be issued.

AIH intends to enter a multi-year contract with a single entity to provide certification examination support services. Note that the single contracted entity may enter into agreements with other entities or individuals to propose on services in response to the RFP and for performance of services.

Today is a friendly reminder that American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) was founded on the purpose of enhancing and strengthening the standing of hydrology as a science and a profession by establishing and maintaining ethical standards to protect the public from irresponsible work. This guiding principle also pertains to our environment as a whole!

Call for Volunteers! – DEI Committee

At the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) Executive Committee’s Annual Meeting, leadership unanimously approved an initiative to create a new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. We are inviting AIH members who are interested in this important topic to join the DEI Committee and help guide AIH’s current and future policies.

What will the DEI Committee Do?
As AIH members, you can help guide the activities and mission of this inaugural DEI Committee. It is anticipated that DEI Committee members will come up with ideas on ways to engage the AIH membership and the water community at large on diversity, equity and inclusion topics related to hydrology. Initial activities could include, but would not be limited to, member surveys, social media strategies, newsletter outreach and developing AIH-wide DEI initiatives.

How to Get Involved with the DEI Committee
Get involved with the DEI Committee by participating as a member and/or as a Co-Chair! We encourage AIH members to volunteer time for the Committee as much as their schedule allows, but a long-term commitment or official position is not required. Please indicate your interest in joining the DEI Committee by emailing admin@aihydrology.org by May 7, 2021.

AIH was founded 40 years ago!

AIH was founded 40 years ago in 1981 by Sandor Csallany, Alex Zaporozec, and Roman Kanivetsky as a non-profit scientific and educational organization that certifies the competence and ethical conduct of professionals in the field of hydrology. AIH’s goal is to promote hydrology as a science and profession and to help protect public interest from non-professional practices. This still holds true today

AIH Executive Committee Annual Meeting Update

The AIH Executive Committee (EC) recently held Day 2 of its Annual Meeting virtually on March 21. The EC heard updates from the breakout groups that were formed regarding member engagement, collaboration with other organizations, collaboration with universities, and public relations and media strategies. The EC also finalized and approved the annual budget for the coming year. Keep an eye out for several new, exciting initiatives and updates in the coming year!

2021 Pi Day!

AIH’s Executive Committee kicked off its Annual Meeting during Pi Day! A key outcome of the day was the establishment of an AIH Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee that will be composed of EC members and AIH members. Breakout groups will convene over next week to address key initiative areas related to member engagement, collaboration with other organizations, collaboration with universities, and public relations and media strategies. Strategies and tactics for addressing the initiatives will be the focus when the Executive Committee reconvenes for the Annual Meeting Day 2 on March 21, 2021.
