Online Workshop: Data Visualization and Informational Design for Water Resources Data

Notes: Short breaks will occur during each part. Registrants will be emailed workshop materials prior to logging on. The virtual workshop takes place using Zoom. Attendees will receive a link with Zoom details upon registration.

OVERVIEW:
This 6-PDH course provides the student with the skills and knowledge to apply innovative visualizations and analysis techniques to water resources data. Topics include theory, development, and use of new types of discharge displays , such as the raster, the lag(1), and the flow duration curve hydrograph are discussed. Examples for surface water, groundwater, water quality, and snowpack are used. Software instruction for data formatting instruction and using the USGS raster hydrograph builder is covered. Discussion of the data formatter will include summarizing and quantifying discharge (Q), discharge change (dQ/dt), rate of discharge change (d2Q/dt2) and sequential discharge summations. Example datasets are used to provide practical experience to the student.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize the different types of information available within time-series datasets.
  2. Comprehend the limitation of traditional data visualization and analysis methods.
  3. Analyze the temporal configuration of time-series datasets.
  4. Quantify streamflow properties.
  5. Construct and interpret raster, lag(1), and enhanced flow duration curve.
  6. Conduct a GIS-like layer analysis of time-series data.
  7. Recognize how the techniques can be applied to model calibrations and sensitivity analyses.
  8. Apply course techniques to different types of water resources datasets.
